BHRT For Women

Your quality of life, as a woman is directly affected b the balances of your hormones. At Heart and Vitality, we believe that just because you age, doesn’t mean that you have to suffer. Woman have a unique cross to bear when it comes to maintaining a healthy hormonal balance. The complex combination of multiple types of hormones, including testosterone, allows them to remain strong and resilient, mentally, physically and emotionally. Imbalances, however, can have detrimental consequences in those areas, as well as lead to failing health.

Estrogen is the most important hormone for women; the loss of estrogen puts her at an increased risk for osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, impaired vision and Parkinson’s disease. The longer a woman is without estrogen, the greater her risk for serious health consequences.

Estrogen receptors are in varying organs throughout the body which is why hormonal imbalances produce a variety of symptoms such as skin elasticity, bone shrinkage, moodiness, and cognitive decline. Estrogen is also thought to be a natural antidepressant and mood stabilizer. This is noticeable when estrogen levels rise in the first week of menses, their overall effect is to increase the amount of serotonin available to the brain’s nerve cells leading to an increase in mood.

The brain needs normal amounts of testosterone in balance with estrogen to produce serotonin which supports emotional balance. Studies on testosterone therapy have demonstrated that testosterone can provide women with mental clarity, increased libido and muscle tone and mass. When women experience low testosterone they often complain of mental confusion, weight gain, and poor muscle tone. By not having bio-identical hormone therapy, the deficiency or imbalance of testosterone can lead to muscle atrophy, osteopenia, osteoporosis and pain in the muscles and joints.

What To Expect

  • Free consultation with our Center Manager where you will discuss your current symptoms and goals.
  • Blood work will be drawn to determine base line hormones. We offer in office lab testing or should it be more convenient, clients can visit LabCorp or Quest Diagnostics Lab location of your choose.
  • In approximately 1 week, after the lab results are received, the first pellet insertion will be scheduled. This procedure is virtually painless with minimal downtime.
  • Five weeks after the initial pellet insertion, another round of labs will be drawn. This allows us to determine if the hormone dose we used was sufficient. If more pellets are required, we will do a “touch up” insert at that time. This is only done after your very first pellet insert.
  • In approximately 90 days, labs will be drawn and the next pellet insert will be scheduled. This step repeats itself every 90 days.

Why Pellets?
Studies have shown optimized hormones significantly reduce the risk of serious health problems such as osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease and diabetes. Pellet therapy uses hormones that replicate the body’s normal hormonal levels. Oral and transdermal forms of hormone therapy can produce turbulent hormone levels, resulting in mood and energy fluctuations. Bio-identical Hormone Therapy (BHRT) uses pellet therapy that provides sustained hormone levels throughout the day for up to three to five months without any “roller coaster” effects.

To create hormone pellets, a compounding pharmacist fuses estrogen or testosterone into small cylinders. These pellets, some of which are smaller than a grain of rice, are placed in the fatty tissue beneath the skin and mimic the actions of healthy ovaries and testicles in regards to hormone release into the bloodstream. The hormone pellet implantation is a quick and easy procedure easily performed in the office.

Pellet dosing is customized for each individual’s needs. Pellets have the capability to deliver bio-identical hormones directly into the bloodstream 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for up to three months. Other methods of hormone therapy cannot provide a steady delivery of hormones 24/7.

The pellets are able to supply a smooth and steady supply of the desired hormone and avoid the erratic absorption and wild fluctuations of circulating levels in your bloodstream that accompany the aforementioned methods. Your body also recognizes the location of this “depot” of hormones that are slowly released and can self-adjust drawing more of the hormones during times of stress or exercise when needed.

BHRT Is Convenient

With the painless placement of the pellets in the upper buttocks region, you avoid having to remember to rub on messy creams, swallow pills, or take weekly painful injections. Once the pellets are placed you can forget about them, and they last for about 3 months for women and 6 months for men.

Pellet Insertion Procedure

The appropriate dose of hormone pellets is customized for each individual and their needs. Several factors will be taken into consideration such as symptoms, lab work, pre-treatment hormone levels and the degree/types of symptoms present.

The bioidentical hormone pellets are inserted with very little discomfort under the skin in the upper buttocks region just below the waistline. We use a local anesthetic (usually lidocaine) to numb the skin and surrounding tissue. You will barely feel the local anesthetic as it numbs the skin and tissue. The very small hormone pellets (about the size of a grain of rice or Tic Tac) are then placed in the hollow needle and inserted into the proper place under the skin, in the fatty tissue. Most people describe it as hurting less than a flu shot or drawing blood from a vein for routine labs. You will usually feel no pain at all after the skin and tissue have been numbed, and while placing the pellets through the hollow needle. For a couple of days after the procedure, the only discomfort you will experience is similar to that of a mild bruise. You will be able to resume all of your normal activities immediately following the procedure. We only ask that you avoid any strenuous activities that specifically target the buttocks muscles for a few days.

We would then have you return to the clinic in 5 weeks for a re-evaluation with the labs repeated. We would review your new hormone levels to see if they are now in the target range and correlate this with the degree of improvement in your symptoms. Pellets allow us individualize your dose and make it easy to adjust your dose to find the right dose to alleviate your symptoms.
